The Power of Social Media Sites
Monday, October 26, 2009 8:11Sites that feature free social networks and social bookmarking are all the rage today. It can be a little difficult, however, when it comes to knowing which to choose. That’s why so many Internet users find reviews of these type of sites so helpful. When you read the reviews, though, you may find that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some might defend their particular choices tooth and claw. That may be due, however, to being unaware of all the available options, so they got hooked on one site without really knowing what’s out there. I’ve known a few who fought for their choice without even knowing the difference between business networking sites, bookmarking sites or sites that feature social networking as a means for people to have fun, date, play games or do various other entertainment-related activities. Even some avid social media users don’t know that there are also social media platforms, like Capazoo, that use small amounts of money per click to pay for people to use and promote their sites.
People often don’t know the distinction between one form of online social networking and another because there is a tremendous amount of cross-over in the platforms. Sites such as Facebook can be used just for fun or for serious business networking, or both! And there are literally tens of thousands of Ning sites, such as Book Market, which specialize in narrow niches. These sites are really where the rubber hits the road when it comes to online social networking because they’re completely user-driven and allow focused conversations surrounding people’s interests. Communities focused on interests, such as book readers, abound. Online social networking websites like Shelfari have everything from chats, book reviews and online bookshelves. Another powerful form of online social networking websites is online social bookmarking, because it opens up new worlds of information storage and retrieval. Sites that feature social bookmarking, such as Reddit, allow logged-in users to save their online bookmarks for free. Social bookmarking sites also are a great help to Web searchers, because keyword tags that allow for easy searching can be assigned to each bookmark. Keyword tagging also makes social bookmarking sites of great interest to online marketers, because they know they will lead to backlinks for their sites. A single social bookmarking link isn’t that meaningful but in aggregate, they matter. As with BloggingZoom, when a link is posted on these web properties, high Google rankings can result if it is submitted properly and has the right keywords associated with it.
The social media landscape is made even more indistinct by sites like Digg, which are set up for both social networking and social bookmarking. They are used for bookmarking but also are equally great for marketing and socializing. You can make a lot of friends on these sites and blog posts featured on these social networking sites have the potential to rank well in Google and other search engines. This makes these type of sites genuine gold to Internet marketers.
